BMW Officially Pulls Wraps Off Flagship X7 SUV

“Hey, BMW.”

by Paul A. Eisenstein on Oct.17, 2018

The new 2019 BMW X7 is ready to take on whatever Mother Nature sends its way.

BMW has been dropping plenty of big hints in recent months as it prepared to launch an all-new flagship. And now, we’re finally getting a look at the production version of the 2019 X7.

As the name might suggest, you can think of the big ute as the SUV counterpoint to the Bavarian brand’s traditional flagship, the 7-Series. And it reflects the massive shift in the global luxury market as highline buyers by the millions switch from sedans and coupes to SUVs and CUVs, mirroring what’s happened in mainstream segments.

News Now!

The 2019 BMW X7 is more than just a stretched version of the familiar X5. It’s not only nine inches longer but loaded with the sort of luxury features you’d expect on a 7-Series – or the also-new 8-Series. It also introduces BMWs new voice assistant infotainment system which, like Amazon’s Alexa, is always listening for its wake words, “Hey, BMW.” (more…)

BMW Looking to Go Beyond the X5 (and 6 and 7)

The future may include some truly radical approaches.

The latest version of the BMW iNext Concept adopts a more SAV-like body design.

Even as the newest version of the X5 gets ready to roll into showrooms around the world, BMW is looking at ways to expand its presence in the fast-growing market for sport-utility vehicles.

The automaker took what seemed like a big risk when it launched the original X5 “Sports-Activity Vehicle” in 1999, but dmand for high-line utes has grown exponentially, leading it to move down-market, all the way to the base X1, with a new flagship, the X7, set to debut next year.

“We see even more demand from our customers,” said Carson Gruber, the BMW AG marketing executive overseeing high-line products like the X5 and X7, during an interview with TheDetroitBureau.com. “BMW is a learning company….and we’re capable of identifying new trends.”

BMW Concept X7 Offers a Big Counterpoint to the Classic 7-Series Sedan

Production version expected for 2019 model-year.

by Paul A. Eisenstein on Sep.08, 2017

The BMW Concept X7 shares the same CLAR architecture as the current 7-Series.

Full-size luxury cars like the 7-Series may still provide the halo that helps define brands like BMW, but sales have been steadily dwindling in recent years, in large part due to the broader shift from passenger cars to light trucks.

That’s one reason why we saw Audi unveil the Q8 concept at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit last January. And as we prepare for the big Frankfurt Motor Show next week, BMW is ready to follow suit with its Concept X7 iPerformance model.

Auto Show News!

While officially being referred to as a “show car,” few observers doubt that what the Bavarian automaker has already begun teasing will soon join the BMW line-up as a counterpoint to both the 7-Series sedan, and the new 8-Series coupe.

BMW May Add More Battery-Cars

New i5 crossover and larger SUV among options.

by Paul A. Eisenstein on Aug.07, 2015

BMW is reportedly adding a new i3 battery crossover that would be similar in size to the current X3.

BMW’s CEO has added more evidence to suggest the Bavarian maker will expand its battery-based sub-brand, BMW i. While Chief Executive Harald Krueger didn’t offer specifics, a new electrified crossover is believed to be one of the options under development.

Meanwhile, sources suggest that BMW may add a big battery-electric SUV to its main brand in a direct challenge to the Tesla Model X sedan due to debut in the coming weeks. Separately, the German company is said to be reexamining the opportunities of working with Apple on the new high-tech vehicle the Silicon Valley powerhouse reportedly wants to develop.

The Complete Story!

“Between the i3 and the i8, there is space if you look at it from the number point of view,” Harald Krueger said in an interview with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung.

Maker needs to expand S.C. plant to build SUV.

by Joseph Szczesny on Mar.25, 2014

BMW is hosting an event at its Spartanburg, S.C. plant later this week where, it's rumored, it will announce plans to build the long-awaited X7 SUV.

BMW is hosting an event this week at its Spartanburg, S.C. plant where the German luxury maker is expected to announce it will build the long-awaited X7 at the plant.

The X7, a large, three-row SUV, has been in and out of BMW’s product plans over the past couple of years. However, with the popularity of other large, full-size luxury SUVs on the rise, BMW executives appear to have given the project a green light.

On Top of the News!

The X7 would be the fifth SUV built in the Spartanburg plant. The plant now builds the X3, X4, X5 and X6 in the Spartanburg plant, which is now undergoing an expansion that will push the plant’s capacity from approximately 300,000 units annually to 350,000 units. Roughly, half the production from the Spartanburg plant is now exported to BMW dealers in an estimated 130 countries around the world. (more…)
