BMW Looking to Go Beyond the X5 (and 6 and 7)

The future may include some truly radical approaches.

The latest version of the BMW iNext Concept adopts a more SAV-like body design.

Even as the newest version of the X5 gets ready to roll into showrooms around the world, BMW is looking at ways to expand its presence in the fast-growing market for sport-utility vehicles.

The automaker took what seemed like a big risk when it launched the original X5 “Sports-Activity Vehicle” in 1999, but dmand for high-line utes has grown exponentially, leading it to move down-market, all the way to the base X1, with a new flagship, the X7, set to debut next year.

“We see even more demand from our customers,” said Carson Gruber, the BMW AG marketing executive overseeing high-line products like the X5 and X7, during an interview with TheDetroitBureau.com. “BMW is a learning company….and we’re capable of identifying new trends.”

BMW Rolling into Geneva with Multiple Debuts

The new X4 to be unveiled, plus X2, M3 CS and i8 also bow.

The 2019 BMW X4 grows in all dimensions but one, with its roofline lowered a mere 0.1 inches.

BMW plans to show a number of vehicles at the Geneva Auto Show next month, including additions to its line-up of electrified vehicles.

The rollouts will include the new edition of the first Sports Activity Coupe, the X4, which is at the premium end of the midsize class, of which BMW has sold more than 200,000 units.

First Look: 2018 BMW X2

BMW adds its smallest ute yet.

There were plenty of skeptics when BMW announced plans to build its first utility vehicle, er, Sport-Activity Vehicle. These days, however, it seems like buyers can’t get enough of them.

And, so, the original X5 SAV has become but one in a broad line-up of utes, large and small, from the Bavarian automaker. And BMW apparently hasn’t run out of white space yet, as it is getting ready to add yet another model to the line-up, the new 2018 X2 xDrive 28i.

“The BMW X2 represents an expression of modern and extrovert vehicle dynamics,” suggested Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design, in describing new model. “This standalone vehicle concept brings a new, fresh and exciting facet of BMW to the compact segment.”
